The History of Recipes

Experts have tracked the existence of recipes far back into antiquity, certainly as far back as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe even further. Interesting though that is, mostly, these early cook books were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.

Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts are a few ancient tablets in Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel wonderful.

As we move into The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote some scripts describing recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, he describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into appetizers, main course and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius also tells us how the chefs of Roman times were skilled in the use of a wide range of herbs and spices, including some that we all recognise for example basil, fennel and asafoetida.

As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times we find two interesting books which date from the 1300s ; a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these two books are not about the indian food that appears on menues today, but rather accounts of the types of food on the tables of the rich and wealthy people of those days.

In the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back many spices and herbs from middle-east cuisine, including spices such as parsley and basil. These new foods and tastes led to an increase in recipe manuscripts, some of which still exist in private cookery archives.

The introduction of television gave us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books.

Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on our web site.
