The History of Recipes

It is possible to follow the history of meal recipes far back into history, certainly as far back into recorded history as the ancient Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that is, in the main part, these old recipes were just primitive pictorial instructions for food preparation.

In fact, the oldest recipe found, according to experts are a few ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel `blissful`.

Later, we find a couple of cookery books dating from the fourteenth century ; a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these two books are nothing to do with the indian food that we all know today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals prepared for the nobility of the period.

For the decades that followed, the powerful and rich houses competed to lay on the most exotic banquets, and as a result the best chefs and their recipe collections became highly prized. However, it was during the 1800s that haute cuisine and recipe books really came of age. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to collecting, trying out, and publishing recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day.

By the time we get to the 20th century, cook books were highly popular mostly due to increased literacy, people having increased leisure time and disposable income.
