The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to track the history of written cooking instructions back into distant history, in truth as far back as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these early recipes were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts are a few ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel exhilarated. Moving on, we have two books published in the 14th Century ; a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, they are not about the indian food that appears on menues today, but rather recipes for the types of meals on the menues of the nobility of the time. During the following few centuries, the wealthy families of Europe tried to offer the most extravagent banquests, and as a result cooks and their recipe collections became highly prized. Even so, it was during the nineteenth century that fine cookery and recipe publications became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to collating, trying out, and publishing recipes to help cooks of their time. By the advent of the 1900s, recipe books were starting to become popular as a result of increased literacy, people having more free time and disposable income. |
