The History of Recipes
It is possible to trace the history of written recipes way back into distant history, in fact as far back into recorded history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further. In practice though, generally, these old cook books were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
During Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius created some scripts describing recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his publication, Apicius recounts how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main course and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius also recounts how the ancient Romans used many different herbs, including some familiar names for example thyme, mint and dill. During the succeeding few hundred years, the powerful and rich competed with each other to lay on the best banquets, and consequentially cooks and their collection of recipes were highly sought after. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that fine cookery and recipe publications became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collating, verifying, and writing down the recipes of their peers. By the arrival of the 20th century, cookbooks are in high demand, due to better eduction, more free time and being a little richer. |
