The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to prove the history of written cooking instructions back into antiquity, in truth as far into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that is, these, old records were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of stone tablets in Sumerian which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel wonderful. Moving on, we find some recipe books dating from the 14th Century - a book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, they are not about the indian curry that we all know today, but instead accounts of the types of food on the tables of the rich and wealthy people of that time. During the next few hundred years, the powerful and rich houses competed to offer the most exotic banquets, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their recipes increased in prestige. However, it was during the nineteenth century that fine cooking and cookery books reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collating, testing, and writing down the recipes of their peers. By the advent of the 1900s, cook books were in great demand, due to more people being able to read, people having more spare time and a general increase in wealth. Like it or not, the introduction of TV gave us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this recipe site. |
We hope you enjoy this 57 Chevy recipe.
