The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to track the history of written cooking instructions way back into distant history, in fact as far back as the ancient Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that is, mostly, these old recipes were just primitive hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.
Progressing into The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a number of documents showing how to cook the recipes cooked by the Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into starters, main meal and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius also recounts how the ancient chefs used a good variety of aromatic flavors, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks for example basil, mint and dill. Later, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back a variety of spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, including coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. These new foods and tastes was responsible for an eruption in books on cooking, many of which are now in private collections. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brings us TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on sites such as this. |
