The History of Recipes

Later, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods and spices from Arab cooking, such as parsley, basil and rosemary. These new foods and tastes caused an outbreak in recipe publications, some of which are now in academic collections.

During the succeeding few centuries, the wealthy families of Wesstern Europe competed to serve up the most extravagent banquests, and as a consequence, cooks and their collection of recipes were much in demand. However, it wasn`t until the 1800s that haute cuisine and recipe publications rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to assembling, testing, and publishing recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them.

By the time we get to the twentieth century, recipe publications are highly popular as a result of more people being able to read, people having more spare time and having more disposable income.

Like it or not, the introduction of TV brought us TV cooks and the demand for the spin-off recipe books.

And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes just like those on this site.
