The History of Recipes
We can track the history of `recipes` far back into the distant past, in fact as far into history as early Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these old cook books were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
Later on, in Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a few scripts showing how to cook the recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, he describes how the roman meals were split into hors d`oeuvres, main course and desserts, something we still use today. He also describes how the ancient chefs were skilled in the use of many different spices and herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs for example basil, fennel and parsley. Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods and herbs from the holy lands, such as coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new spices and herbs caused a torrent in cookery books, most of which still exist in private libraries. The introduction of the TV gave us TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting us all to access massive numbers of recipes like those on this site. |
