The History of Recipes
Academics have proved the existance of recipes way back into the distant past, at least as far back into recorded history as the Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, these, ancient recipes were just simple pictorial recipes for meal preparation.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe in existence, according to academics are a few tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel `wonderful`. During the time of the Roman Empire a man called Apicius assembled a few documents describing recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his works, he tells us how the roman meals were split into starters, main meal and desserts, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius informs us how the ancient cooks used many herbs, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens such as thyme, mint and dill. In the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back many foods, spices and herbs from Arab countries, including coriander, parsley, and rosemary. The introduction of these new tastes led to an eruption in books on cooking, most of which still exist in academic collections. The introduction of television brought us TV cookery programs and the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading. |
