The History of Recipes
We are able to follow the history of meal recipes far back into antiquity, certainly as far back into recorded history as pharonic Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, mostly, these ancient cookbooks were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to food historians are some ancient tablets in the Sumerian language describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel exhilarated. As we move on, we find a couple of cookery books which were published in the fourteenth century - a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these books are unconnected to the spicy food that we all know today, but instead recipes for the types of food prepared for the rich and powerful of that time. During the following few hundred years, the powerful and wealthy houses competed to serve the most extravagent meals, and because of this the best chefs and their recipes were at a premium. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century the formal cooking and recipe books reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to collecting, testing, and publishing recipes common in their social group. By the time we get to the 1900s, cook books are highly popular as a result of higher levels of literacy, people having increased spare time and having more money to spend. The arrival of television gave us TV cooks and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
