The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as an idea can be observed far back into history, certainly as far back as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. In practice though, mostly, these early cookbooks were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to historians is a series of stone tablets in the Sumerian language which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel `wonderful`. Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, we find two interesting books dating from the 14th Century : one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these books are unconnected to the indian curry that appears on menues today, but rather accounts of the types of food cooked for the upper classes. Over the following few centuries, the powerful and rich houses competed with each other to serve the most exotic banquets, and because of this cooks and their collection of recipes were greatly in demand. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 19th century that cookery and recipe publications really came of age. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to collating, verifying, and writing down popular recipes of the day. The arrival of TV gave us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to search through thousands of recipes like those on this web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Angel's Face recipe.
