The History of Recipes
We can trace the history of `recipes` far back into ancient history, certainly as far back as the early Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, sadly, these early recipes were just basic pictorial recipes for food preparation.
Progressing into Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled some scripts describing recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. He tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into appetizers, entrees and desserts, something that is very familiar to us today. Additionally, he describes how the Romans made use of a wide range of spices, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs like basil, fennel and asafoetida. Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought us many foods, spices and herbs from the holy lands, including spices like rosemary and coriander. These new culinary innovations led to a surge in books on cooking, some of which are kept safe in private collections. The introduction of the TV gave us cooking programs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on this recipe site. |
We hope you enjoy this Apple Blossom recipe.
