The History of Recipes
We are able to track the history of written recipes far back into history, in truth as far into history as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, generally, these early recipes were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history is a series of clay tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel exhilarated and blissful. As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a number of documents which described recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his publication, he tells us how the roman meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and dessert, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Additionally, he recounts how the early Romans made use of many different spices, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens for example basil, fennel and parsley. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back many new spices and herbs from Arab countries, such as parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas created a surge in recipe manuscripts, the majority of which still exist in private cookery archives. The revolution that is television gave us celebrity chefs and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on this web site. |
