The History of Recipes
Experts have found proof that recipes existed way back into distant history, in fact as far back as early Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that is, mostly, these early cook books were just simple hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to academics is a series of clay tablets in Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel wonderful. Closer to modern times, there were some interesting books which were published in the fourteenth century : a cookery book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these have no connection with the indian food that is familiar to us all today, but rather recipes for the types of meals on the tables of the nobility of that period. Over the following few centuries, the rich families of Wesstern Europe competed with each other to serve the most exotic banquets, and as a result chefs and their collection of recipes became highly prized. However, it wasn`t until the 19th century that fine cookery and recipe books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to collating, testing, and writing down the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. By the arrival of the twentieth century, cooking publications are in high demand, due to increased literacy, more spare time and disposable income. The introduction of television brings us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes like those on this site. |
