The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to track the history of recipes way back into history, in truth as far back as the Egyptians, and maybe further still. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these ancient records were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts are some tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel wonderful. During Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a collection of scripts which described recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his works, Apicius recounts how the roman meals were separated into starters, main meal and afters, something we still use today. This early Roman chef tells us how the Roman cooks used many different herbs, including many that are still in use today for example bay, mint and asafoetida. During the succeeding few centuries, the rich and powerful families of Europe tried to offer the best banquets, and as a result the best cooks and their recipes became highly prized. Even so, it was during the 19th century that cooking and recipe collections became really popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collating, verifying, and recording recipes common in their social group. By the time we get to the twentieth century, cookery publications are starting to become popular due to increased literacy, people having more spare time and disposable income. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brings us celebrity TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes like those on the site you are now reading. |
