The History of Recipes
Food historians have traced the existence of recipes way back into antiquity, certainly as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, generally, these early records were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe in existence, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are some tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel blissful. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years there were a couple of recipe books which appeared in the fourteenth century ; one book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, they are unconnected to the spicy food that appears on menues today, but instead accounts of the types of meals prepared by the chefs of the nobility of the time. Over the following few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of Wesstern Europe competed to serve the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their recipe collections were greatly in demand. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 19th century that cooking and recipe publications became popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to assembling, verifying, and recording recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. The introduction of television brings us TV cooks and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on the site you are now reading. |
