The History of Recipes
Experts have tracked the existance of recipes back into ancient history, certainly as far as pharonic Egypt, and maybe even further. In practice though, sadly, these ancient cook books were just simple hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.
Closer to modern times, we have a couple of cookery books published in the 1300s - one book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, they are unconnected to the curry that we all know today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals prepared by the chefs of the rich and powerful. In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods and spices from Arab countries, including spices such as coriander, parsley, and basil. These new culinary innovations led to an eruption in manuscripts on cooking, most of which are now in academic collections. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us TV cooks and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our web site. |
