The History of Recipes

Food historians have traced the existance of recipes back into antiquity, at least as far into history as ancient Egypt, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, these, early recipes were just very simple hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.

Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe found, according to academics are a few tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`.

As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times we have two interesting books which appeared in the 1300s - a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, they are not about the curry that is popular today, but rather accounts of the types of food on the menues of the upper classes.

In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many foods and herbs from the Middle-East, including spices such as coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new herbs and spices led to an increase in manuscripts on food, many of which still exist in private cookery archives.

Over the next few centuries, the rich families of Wesstern Europe competed with each other to serve the most exotic meals, and as a result chefs and their recipes were at a premium. Even so, it was during the nineteenth century that formal cookery and recipe collections really came of age. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to collating, trying out, and publishing recipes of the day.

By the arrival of the twentieth century, cooking publications are in high demand, mostly as a result of increased literacy, leisure time and having more disposable income.

The introduction of television brings us cooking programs and the recipe books that accompanied them.

And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as this.
