The History of Recipes
Experts have tracked the existance of recipes far back into ancient history, in truth as far into history as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. However, mostly, these ancient records were just primitive hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe found, according to Professor Solomon Katz, is a series of ancient tablets in Sumerian which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel exhilarated. Closer to modern times, there were two interesting recipe books which date from the 14th Century : one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these two books are unconnected to the curry that is popular today, but rather recipes for the types of food served to the rich people of that period. During the succeeding few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of the West tried to serve up the most exotic banquets, and as a result cooks and their collection of recipes were greatly in demand. Even so, it was during the nineteenth century that cooking and recipe collections rose to prominence. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to assembling, trying out, and publishing the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. By the arrival of the 1900s, cookery books were starting to become popular mostly due to increased literacy, people having more free time and being a little richer. |
