The History of Recipes
Experts have proved the existance of recipes back into history, in fact as far back into history as early Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that is, sadly, these ancient recipes were just simple hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to experts is a series of clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel blissful and exhilarated. During the time of the Roman Empire a man called Apicius compiled a few documents showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his scrolls, he describes how the meals were separated into appetizers, main meal and desserts, a very modern way of dining. Additionally, he informs us how the chefs of Roman times used many herbs, including some that we all recognise such as basil, rue and dill. In the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back a variety of foods and herbs from middle-east cuisine, including spices like basil and rosemary. These new foods and tastes created an eruption in recipe books, most of which are now in private collections. Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this web site. |
