The History of Recipes
It is possible to follow the history of `recipes` far back into distant history, in fact as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, these, early cookbooks were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history are a few clay tablets in the Sumerian language which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel wonderful and blissful. Later on, in The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius created some scripts showing how to cook the recipes prepared by the Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius tells us how the roman meals were split into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and desserts, a very modern way of dining. This early Roman chef recounts how the ancient Romans made use of many spices, including some that we all recognise like thyme, fennel and asafoetida. Later, we find a couple of books dating from the 1300s - a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these are unconnected to the spicy food that we all know today, but rather recipes for the types of meals served to the rich and wealthy people of those days. Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought back many new foods, spices and herbs from Arab cooking, such as coriander, parsley, and basil. The introduction of these new herbs and spices prompted an eruption in cookery books, the majority of which still exist in private libraries. The arrival of television gave us celebrity TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this web site. |
