The History of Recipes

It is quite possible to follow the history of transcribed cooking instructions back into history, in truth as far as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further. Having said that, in the main part, these ancient recipes were just simple pictorial recipes for meal preparation.

Progressing into Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a few documents which described recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the roman meals were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and afters, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius also informs us how the ancient Romans were skilled in the use of many aromatic flavors, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens such as bay, fennel and dill.

Later on in the 1400s, the Crusaders brought back many new foods and herbs from the East, such as basil and coriander. These new foods and spices prompted an eruption in cookery books, some of which are kept safe in private collections.

The introduction of the TV brought us celebrity chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them.

Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as this.
