The History of Recipes
Academics have proved the existance of recipes way back into history, certainly as far back into history as ancient Egypt, and maybe even further. However, mostly, these ancient recipes were just primitive hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered, according to Professor Solomon Katz, is a series of ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel wonderful. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times we have a couple of recipe books which were published in the 14th Century ; a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these two books have no connection with the curry that is popular today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals on the menus of the rich people of the time. In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods and spices from the holy land, including rosemary and coriander. The introduction of these new herbs and spices created an outbreak in manuscripts on cooking, many of which are kept safe in academic collections. Over the following few centuries, the upper-class families of Europe competed to serve up the most extravagent banquests, and consequentially the best cooks and their recipe collections were highly sought after. Even so, it was during the 1800s that formal cookery and recipe collections became popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to collating, verifying, and publishing popular recipes of the day. The introduction of television brings us TV cooks and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our web site. |
