The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to track the history of recipes way back into the far past, certainly as far back as ancient Egypt, and maybe further still. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these early cook books were just primitive hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history are a few clay tablets in Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel wonderful and blissful. Moving on, we have two interesting books which appeared in the 14th Century - a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these books have no connection with the indian curry that we all know today, but instead recipes for the types of food prepared by the cooks of the upper classes of that period. During the following few centuries, the upper-class families of Europe competed with each other to serve the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their recipes could command a high salary. Even so, it wasn`t until the 1800s that fine cooking and cookery books became popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collating, testing, and writing down recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. The revolution that is television brings us cooking programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes like those on this site. |
