The History of Recipes
We are able to read the history of meal recipes back into antiquity, in truth as far as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe further still. However, generally, these ancient recipes were just very simple pictorial instructions for preparing food.
As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a collection of scripts which described recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his publication, he recounts how the meals were divided into hors d`oeuvres, main course and afters, a very modern way of dining. He also describes how the Roman chefs made use of many different aromatic flavours, including a few you will know such as basil, mint and parsley. During the next few centuries, the wealthy families of the West tried to lay on the most extravagent banquests, and as a result the best cooks and their recipe collections increased in prestige. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that cooking and recipe books became popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, trying out, and writing down the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. The revolution that is television brought us celebrity chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to search through thousands of recipes like those on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
