The History of Recipes

We can read the history of `recipes` way back into antiquity, certainly as far back into recorded history as pharonic Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Having said that, sadly, these old cook books were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.

Later on, there were a couple of recipe books which were published in the fourteenth century ; one book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these two books have no connection with the spicy food that is popular today, but rather recipes for the types of meals on the menues of the upper classes of those days.

Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods and spices from Arab cuisine, including basil and coriander. These new spices and herbs led to an outbreak in manuscripts on cookery, many of which still exist in private collections.

The introduction of the TV brings us TV cooks and the demand for the accompanying recipe books.

Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes just like those on sites such as this.
