The History of Recipes

Academics have tracked the existence of recipes far back into distant history, in truth as far back as ancient Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, these, ancient records were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.

Progressing into The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a few documents which described recipes cooked by the Romans. In his publication, Apicius recounts how the meals were divided into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius also tells us how the Roman chefs used many aromatic flavors, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs such as basil, rue and asafoetida.

In the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back many new foods and herbs from the holy land, including spices like basil and coriander. The introduction of these new herbs and spices caused a surge in books on cooking, many of which still exist in private cookery archives.

By the arrival of the twentieth century, cook books were starting to become popular mostly as a result of better eduction, people having increased leisure time and having more money to spend.
