The History of Recipes
Experts have found proof that recipes existed back into the far past, in fact as far back into history as the Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that is, these, early recipes were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
Later on, in Roman times 25BC a man called Apicius created a number of documents showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his scrolls, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into appetizers, main meal and afters, something we still use today. Aspicius tells us how the Roman cooks used many spices and herbs, including some familiar names such as basil, fennel and asafoetida. In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods, spices and herbs from Arab countries, including basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas led to an eruption in cookery books, many of which are kept safe in private collections. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
