The History of Recipes

Food historians have tracked the existance of recipes way back into distant history, certainly as far back into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that is, in the main part, these ancient cookbooks were just simple pictorial instructions for preparing meals.

Interestingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to Professor Solomon Katz, is a series of clay tablets in the Sumerian language which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel `wonderful`.

During Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a number of documents detailing recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, he describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius also informs us how the ancient Romans made use of many herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks such as bay, rue and asafoetida.

During the succeeding few hundred years, the upper-class families of the West competed to serve the most extravagent banquests, and because of this cooks and their collection of recipes were greatly in demand. However, it wasn`t until the 1800s that cookery and recipe collections became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to collecting, verifying, and publishing the recipes that were being prepared for the better households.

Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us TV cooks and the demand for the spin-off recipe books.

Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading.
