The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as an idea can be observed far back into the distant past, certainly as far as early Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these old records were just simple pictorial instructions for food preparation.
As we move into The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a few documents detailing recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into starters, main meal and desserts, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius also describes how the chefs of Roman times made use of many different aromatic flavors, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs such as bay, mint and dill. In the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods and herbs from Arab cuisine, such as basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new herbs and spices was responsible for an explosion in books on cookery, some of which still exist in private collections. The arrival of TV gave us TV cooks and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on sites such as this. |
