The History of Recipes
It is possible to trace the history of `recipes` way back into ancient history, certainly as far back as ancient Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that is, these, early cookbooks were just very basic hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.
Later on, in The time of the roman empire 25BC a man called Apicius compiled some scripts describing recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into starters, main course and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius tells us how the early Romans used a wide range of aromatic flavours, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks like basil, mint and parsley. During the following few hundred years, the rich families of Europe competed with each other to serve the most exotic meals, and as a result the best chefs and their collection of recipes were at a premium. However, it was during the nineteenth century that cookery and recipe collections rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to assembling, trying out, and publishing recipes to help cooks of their time. The arrival of television brought us cooking programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes just like those on our site. |
