The History of Recipes
We are able to track the history of written recipes far back into ancient history, certainly as far back as the Egyptians, and possibly even further. In practice though, mostly, these early cookbooks were just basic hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.
As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled some scripts describing recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and afters, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius informs us how the ancient cooks made use of a good variety of spices and herbs, including some that we all recognise such as basil, rue and dill. During the next few centuries, the rich and powerful families of the West competed with each other to serve the best banquets, and consequentially cooks and their recipes were much in demand. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 1800s that formal cookery and recipe books really came of age. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to collecting, testing, and writing down popular recipes of the day. The revolution that is television gave us cooking programs and the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this site. |
We hope you enjoy this New Vegetarian Recipes List recipe.
