The History of Recipes
Food historians have traced the existence of recipes back into distant history, in truth as far back as early Egypt, and potentially, even further back. In practice though, generally, these early recipes were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts are some ancient tablets in Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel exhilarated and blissful. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years there are two books which appeared in the fourteenth century ; a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, they are nothing to do with the curry that is served today, but instead recipes for the types of food prepared for the rich and powerful of that period. Over the following few hundred years, the wealthy families of Europe tried to offer the most extravagent meals, and as a result the best chefs and their recipe collections became highly prized. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 1800s that cooking and cookery books rose to prominence. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to assembling, testing, and writing down recipes to help cooks of their time. The introduction of television brought us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on this site. |
