The History of Recipes
We are able to read the history of `recipes` way back into antiquity, at least as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and maybe even further. However, mostly, these early records were just very basic pictorial recipes for meal preparation.
As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a few scripts describing recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. In his works, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and afters, something that is very familiar to us today. He also recounts how the ancient cooks made use of a wide range of herbs and spices, including some that we all recognise such as bay, rue and dill. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us many foods, spices and herbs from the holy lands, including spices such as parsley, basil and rosemary. These new herbs and spices prompted an explosion in manuscripts on cookery, some of which still exist in private cookery archives. The revolution that is television brings us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on our web site. |
