: Mix the orange juice, lemon juice, sugar and orange rind
together and drizzle the mixture over the three still warm cake
layers. Be careful not to let it all soak into one spot.

The History of Recipes
Recipes as an idea can be tracked far back into ancient history, at least as far into history as the ancient Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that is, mostly, these old cookbooks were just very basic pictorial recipes for food preparation.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe found, according to historians is a series of clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel `wonderful`. Continuing our culinary historical journey, there were two recipe books dating from the fourteenth century ; one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these two books have no connection with the indian curry that is popular today, but instead recipes for the types of food prepared by the chefs of the rich and powerful of the time. Over the succeeding few centuries, the rich and powerful families of the West competed to offer the most exotic banquets, and as a result the best chefs and their recipe collections were much in demand. However, it was during the 19th century that cookery and recipe collections became popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, testing, and writing down recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. When we get to the 20th century, cookery books are in great demand, mostly due to increased literacy, people having increased leisure time and having more money. The TV revolution gave us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
