The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to prove the history of written cooking instructions back into the far past, in truth as far back as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. However, mostly, these early recipes were just basic hieroglyphic recipes for meal preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to food historians is a collection of ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel `wonderful`. Later on, we have two books dating from the 14th Century : a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, they are unconnected to the indian curry that is familiar to us all today, but rather descriptions of the types of food on the tables of the upper classes of the period. For the centuries that followed, the rich families of the West tried to offer the most exotic banquets, and as a consequence, cooks and their collection of recipes could command a high salary. Even so, it was during the nineteenth century that cookery and recipe books rose to prominence. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, spent years to collating, verifying, and recording recipes of the day. The introduction of the TV brings us celebrity TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to access massive numbers of recipes like those on our web site. |
