The History of Recipes

Historians have proved the existence of recipes back into antiquity, in fact as far into history as the early Egyptians, and maybe even further. Interesting though that is, sadly, these ancient cook books were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.

Progressing into The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a collection of documents showing how to cook the recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, he describes how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main course and dessert, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. He also recounts how the cooks of Roman times were skilled in the use of a good variety of herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks for example bay, rue and dill.

In the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back a variety of foods, spices and herbs from the Middle-East, including spices such as basil and rosemary. These new foods and tastes caused a torrent in publications on food, some of which are kept safe in academic collections.

The introduction of television brought us TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books.

And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes such as those found on the site you are now reading.
