The History of Recipes
We are able to follow the history of written recipes way back into the far past, certainly as far as the early Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. However, mostly, these old cookbooks were just primitive hieroglyphic instructions for food preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered, according to food historians is a series of ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel wonderful and blissful. As we move on, we have a couple of cookery books dating from the fourteenth century ; a cookery book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these books are unconnected to the curry that is familiar to us all today, but instead recipes for the types of meals on the menues of the nobility of those days. During the following few hundred years, the upper-class families of Europe competed to lay on the most exotic banquets, and consequentially the best cooks and their recipe collections were at a premium. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 19th century that cooking and recipe books rose to prominence. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to collecting, trying out, and publishing recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. By the time we get to the 1900s, cooking books are highly popular mostly due to better eduction, more leisure time and having more money to spend. |
