The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to track the history of recipes way back into distant history, at least as far as pharonic Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, mostly, these early records were just basic pictorial recipes for food preparation.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe found, according to food historians are a few tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel `blissful`. Closer to modern times, there were two interesting books published in the fourteenth century - a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these two books are nothing to do with the curry that we all know today, but instead accounts of the types of meals served to the upper classes of that period. Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought back many new spices and herbs from the Middle-East, including spices such as coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new herbs and spices created an explosion in manuscripts on cooking, most of which are kept safe in private cookery archives. For the centuries that followed, the powerful and wealthy houses tried to serve the most exotic banquets, and as a result chefs and their recipes could command a high salary. Even so, it wasn`t until the 19th century that cooking and recipe books became popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to assembling, testing, and writing down recipes common in their social group. The arrival of television gave us celebrity chefs and the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to search through thousands of recipes just like those on this web site. |
We hope you enjoy this African Chow Mein recipe.
