The History of Recipes
It is possible to follow the history of `recipes` way back into antiquity, at least as far back as pharonic Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Having said that, generally, these early cookbooks were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
Later on, in The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a few scripts detailing recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, Apicius recounts how the roman meals were divided into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and afters, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius also describes how the ancient chefs used many different herbs, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens like bay, fennel and dill. For the decades that followed, the rich and powerful families of Wesstern Europe competed to offer the most extravagent meals, and because of this cooks and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 1800s that cooking and recipe books became really popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to collating, verifying, and recording recipes to help cooks of their time. The arrival of television brings us TV cookery programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes like those on the site you are now reading. |
We hope you enjoy this After School Mix recipe.
