The History of Recipes

It is actually possible to trace the history of written cooking instructions back into distant history, at least as far back as pharonic Egypt, and possibly even further than that. However, sadly, these early cook books were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.

Interestingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to food historians is a collection of tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel wonderful and blissful.

During Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a number of scripts describing recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the roman meals were separated into appetizers, main meal and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. This early Roman chef informs us how the cooks of Roman times used a good variety of aromatic flavors, including a few you will know for example basil, rue and parsley.

Later, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back many foods and spices from Arab cuisine, including spices such as parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new herbs and spices led to an eruption in publications on food, some of which are kept safe in private cookery archives.

By the time we get to the twentieth century, cook books are in high demand, as a result of higher levels of literacy, more spare time and having more money to spend.

Like it or not, the introduction of TV gave us cooking programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books.

Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on sites such as this.
