The History of Recipes
Academics have traced the existence of recipes way back into antiquity, in truth as far as the ancient Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. However, in the main part, these old cook books were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of clay tablets in Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel blissful and exhilarated. Moving on, we find two interesting recipe books which appeared in the 1300s - a book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these two books have no connection with the spicy food that appears on menues today, but instead accounts of the types of food on the tables of the upper classes of that period. During the following few centuries, the families of Europe tried to serve up the most exotic meals, and as a result chefs and their recipes increased in prestige. Nevertheless, it was during the 19th century the formal cooking and recipe publications rose to prominence. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to assembling, verifying, and publishing popular recipes of the day. The revolution that is television gave us celebrity TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on the site you are now reading. |
We hope you enjoy this Alfredo Sauce (Light Cream) recipe.
