The History of Recipes
Food historians have found proof that recipes existed far back into ancient history, in fact as far as ancient Egypt, and maybe even further. Interesting though that is, mostly, these ancient cookbooks were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts is a series of clay tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel blissful. During Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled some scripts showing how to cook the recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his works, he recounts how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius also informs us how the cooks of his times were skilled in the use of a good variety of aromatic flavors, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens like basil, fennel and dill. In the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us many new spices and herbs from the East, including spices such as rosemary and coriander. These new foods and tastes caused an explosion in manuscripts on food, some of which are kept safe in academic collections. Like it or not, the introduction of television gave us celebrity TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on sites such as this. |
