The History of Recipes
Food historians have proved the existance of recipes back into distant history, certainly as far back into history as the ancient Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that is, these, ancient cook books were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
During the time of the Roman Empire a Roman scholar, called Apicius, assembled some scrolls detailing recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his works, he describes how the roman meals were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main course and dessert, a very modern way of dining. He also tells us how the cooks of Roman times made use of many different herbs and spices, including some familiar names for example basil, mint and parsley. Over the following few hundred years, the wealthy families of Europe competed to serve up the most exotic banquets, and consequentially the best chefs and their collection of recipes were much in demand. However, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that haute cuisine and recipe books became really popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to collating, verifying, and writing down recipes common in their social group. Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to search through thousands of recipes like those on our web site. |
