The History of Recipes

We are able to read the history of `recipes` back into distant history, certainly as far as the Egyptians, and maybe further still. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these early cookbooks were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.

As we move into The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius created a collection of scripts detailing recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, he describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into starters, entrees and dessert, a style of dining still practiced today. This early Roman chef describes how the Roman cooks used many spices and herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks like thyme, fennel and dill.

During the next few hundred years, the rich families of Europe competed to serve up the most extravagent banquests, and consequentially cooks and their recipes were highly sought after. However, it was during the 1800s that fine cookery and recipe collections became really popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collecting, testing, and publishing recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them.

By the time we get to the twentieth century, recipe books were in great demand, as a result of better eduction, people having more free time and being a little richer.
