The History of Recipes

It is possible to read the history of `recipes` back into antiquity, certainly as far into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe even further. Having said that, sadly, these early cook books were just very basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.

In fact, the oldest recipe found, according to academics is a series of ancient tablets in Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel wonderful.

Later on, in The time of the roman empire 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a collection of documents describing recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his publication, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and desserts, something we still use today. Aspicius informs us how the ancient cooks used many different spices, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens for example bay, mint and asafoetida.

Later, there are a couple of interesting recipe books published in the 1300s - a cookery book called `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these books have no connection with the indian curry that is familiar to us all today, but rather recipes for the types of food on the menus of the rich people of the time.

Later, in the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back many foods and spices from the Middle-East, including spices such as coriander, parsley, and basil. These new foods and spices created an explosion in books on cooking, many of which still exist in private libraries.

For the decades that followed, the powerful families of Europe competed with each other to lay on the most extravagent banquests, and as a result chefs and their recipes were at a premium. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 19th century that fine cooking and recipe collections really came of age. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to assembling, testing, and recording recipes common in their social group.

By the time we get to the 1900s, cooking books were in high demand, as a result of increased literacy, leisure time and having more disposable income.

The arrival of television brought us cooking programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books.

And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes like those on this web site.
