The History of Recipes
We can track the history of meal recipes back into antiquity, certainly as far back into recorded history as the Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these old cook books were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
In fact, the oldest recipe discovered, according to academics are some stone tablets in the Sumerian language describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel wonderful. Later, there are a couple of cookery books from the 1300s ; a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these books are unconnected to the curry that we all know today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals prepared by the chefs of the rich and wealthy people of those days. For the centuries that followed, the powerful families of Europe competed to serve the best banquets, and consequentially chefs and their recipe collections were much in demand. Even so, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that cooking and cookery books became really popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collecting, trying out, and recording recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. The introduction of the TV brought us TV cooks and the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
We hope you enjoy this Almond Gateau recipe.
