The History of Recipes

Historians have traced the existance of recipes back into ancient history, at least as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and maybe even further. Interesting though that is, mostly, these old recipes were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.

Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe found, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are some ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel `wonderful`.

As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years we have a couple of interesting books from the 1300s : a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these two books have no connection with the curry that we all know today, but instead recipes for the types of meals enjoyed by the nobility of the period.

Over the following few hundred years, the rich families of the West competed with each other to serve up the best banquets, and as a result chefs and their collection of recipes were highly sought after. However, it was during the 19th century that cooking and recipe books reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collecting, trying out, and publishing recipes common in their social group.

Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us cooking programs and the spin-off recipe books.

And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes such as those found on our site.
