The History of Recipes

Experts have traced the existance of recipes way back into ancient history, in fact as far back as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and potentially, even further back. In practice though, in the main part, these ancient cookbooks were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.

Interestingly, the most ancient recipe found, according to food historians is a collection of ancient tablets in Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel `blissful`.

Closer to modern times, we have some interesting books published in the fourteenth century : a book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, they are unconnected to the spicy food that is popular today, but rather recipes for the types of food on the menus of the rich and powerful.

During the succeeding few centuries, the rich families of Europe strove to offer the most extravagent banquests, and as a result the best chefs and their collection of recipes could command a high salary. Notwithstanding that, it was during the nineteenth century the formal cooking and recipe collections became really popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to assembling, testing, and writing down recipes common in their social group.

By the arrival of the 1900s, recipe books were greatly in demand as a result of increased literacy, people having increased leisure time and having more money to spend.
