The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as an idea can be tracked way back into history, certainly as far as pharonic Egypt, and possibly even further. Having said that, in the main part, these ancient cook books were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe in existence, according to food historians are some clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, there were a couple of cookery books which were published in the 1300s - a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, they have no connection with the curry that is familiar to us all today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals cooked for the upper classes. Over the following few centuries, the rich and powerful families of Europe competed to lay on the most extravagent banquests, and as a consequence, chefs and their recipes could command a high salary. Nevertheless, it was during the 19th century that formal cookery and recipe books reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to assembling, testing, and recording recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. The arrival of TV brings us TV cooks and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes like those on this recipe site. |
