The History of Recipes
We are able to track the history of written recipes back into the distant past, at least as far back into history as the early Egyptians, and maybe even further. Having said that, these, ancient cook books were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history are a few stone tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel wonderful and blissful. As we move on, there are some recipe books dating from the 1300s - a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these two books are unconnected to the indian curry that is served today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals prepared by the cooks of the rich people of the period. During the following few hundred years, the powerful families of Europe competed with each other to offer the most exotic banquets, and because of this chefs and their recipes increased in prestige. Notwithstanding that, it was during the nineteenth century that cookery and cookery books became popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collecting, trying out, and recording recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. The arrival of TV gave us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on this web site. |
