The History of Recipes
Experts have proved the existence of recipes far back into distant history, in fact as far back as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that is, mostly, these early cook books were just primitive hieroglyphic instructions for food preparation.
As we move into The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a few documents showing how to cook the recipes cooked by the Romans. In his scrolls, he describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and desserts, something that is very familiar to us today. This early Roman chef recounts how the early Romans used a wide range of aromatic flavors, including some that we all recognise like bay, rue and parsley. In the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods and spices from the holy lands, including spices like basil and rosemary. These new foods and tastes caused an outbreak in books on cooking, some of which still exist in private libraries. By the arrival of the 20th century, cook books were greatly in demand as a result of better eduction, people having increased free time and a general increase in wealth. |
