The History of Recipes

It is quite feasible to track the history of written cooking instructions back into history, certainly as far back into recorded history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that is, mostly, these old cook books were just very simple hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.

The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered, according to food historians is a collection of tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel wonderful and blissful.

As we move into Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a few scripts detailing recipes prepared by the Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius informs us how the Roman cooks made use of many spices, including many that are still in use today such as basil, fennel and dill.

Moving on, there are a couple of cookery books published in the fourteenth century ; a book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these books have no connection with the indian curry that is popular today, but instead recipes for the types of food on the tables of the nobility of that period.

Later, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods and spices from the holy lands, including spices like basil and coriander. These new foods and tastes created an explosion in recipe books, many of which are kept safe in private collections.

By the advent of the 1900s, recipe publications are highly popular as a result of better eduction, people having increased spare time and having more money to spend.

Like it or not, the introduction of TV brought us TV cooks and the demand for the spin-off recipe books.

And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this recipe site.
