The History of Recipes
It is possible to follow the history of `recipes` far back into history, at least as far as pharonic Egypt, and potentially, even further back. However, in the main part, these ancient cookbooks were just primitive pictorial instructions for food preparation.
In fact, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to food historians are a few clay tablets in Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel blissful. Later on, in The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a few documents describing recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his publication, he tells us how the meals were split into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and desserts, something that is very familiar to us today. Additionally, he recounts how the Roman chefs made use of many spices and herbs, including many that are still in use today such as basil, rue and parsley. Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought back many foods and spices from Arab cuisine, including spices like basil and coriander. These new herbs and spices created an explosion in recipe books, some of which still exist in private cookery archives. The arrival of television gave us cooking programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
We hope you enjoy this Antipasto De Verona recipe.
