The History of Recipes
We can read the history of written recipes far back into antiquity, in fact as far back into recorded history as early Egypt, and maybe even further. Having said that, mostly, these old recipes were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
Later on, in Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote some scripts showing how to cook the recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and desserts, something we still use today. Aspicius recounts how the early Romans used a wide range of herbs, including many that are still in use today like bay, fennel and parsley. For the next few years, the powerful and wealthy houses strove to serve the most extravagent meals, and as a result chefs and their collection of recipes were highly sought after. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 19th century that fine cooking and recipe books became really popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to assembling, verifying, and recording recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. The introduction of the TV gave us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes just like those on the site you are now reading. |
We hope you enjoy this Appetizer From Black Grapes (Mantala Od Grozd recipe.
