The History of Recipes
Academics have found proof that recipes existed way back into history, in truth as far as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these early recipes were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
Later on, in The time of the roman empire 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a few scripts showing how to cook the recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and afters, a very modern way of dining. Additionally, he recounts how the chefs of Roman times used many aromatic flavours, including a few you will know like bay, mint and parsley. Later, in the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back many new spices and herbs from the Middle-East, including spices like parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new tastes prompted a surge in manuscripts on cooking, the majority of which are now in private libraries. The arrival of television brought us celebrity TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
