The History of Recipes
It is possible to trace the history of meal recipes back into the far past, in fact as far back as the early Egyptians, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these old cook books were just basic pictorial instructions for food preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe found, according to historians are some stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Moving on, we find two recipe books which were published in the 14th Century : one book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these books are not about the curry that is familiar to us all today, but rather recipes for the types of meals on the menues of the wealthy. During the following few centuries, the families of Europe competed to serve up the most extravagent meals, and as a result the best cooks and their collection of recipes were much in demand. Even so, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that fine cookery and recipe collections rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to collecting, verifying, and recording recipes common in their social group. By the advent of the 1900s, cookbooks were in great demand, as a result of increased literacy, people having more leisure time and having more money. |
